Spotlight on Justice of the Pies

Maya-Camille Broussard has always had an entrepreneurial spirit. At a young age she owned an art gallery with a bar in the South Loop called “Three Peas Art Lounge”. Shortly after closing the gallery, she created Justice of the Pies – a bakery specializing in sweet and savory pies, quiches and tarts.

Maya-Camille established Justice of the Pies in 2014 in honor of her late father, Stephen (Steve) J. Broussard. Justice of the Pies began as a Kickstarter campaign that was curated by Accion and then merged into a full-fledged business.

Steve, who dubbed himself the Pie Master, was a criminal defense attorney with a passion for baking. Justice of the Pies was created to celebrate his love for pies and to honor his belief that everyone deserves an opportunity to reform their lives.

Maya-Camille has tapped into resources to help grow her business through ChiBizHub. ChiBizHub is a local resource for business owners and startups to power connections in order to start, scale and accelerate their business. For the established 100+ resource network, ChiBizHub is a platform to provide best fit referrals, assistance in building a network, and to showcase the story of Chicago entrepreneurship.

As part of this, in 2016, she became a fellow of FamilyFarmed’s Good Food Accelerator, which helped her to focus on growing a food brand with a focus on local sustainability. She is also a fellow of Accion’s Neighborhood Entrepreneurship Lab which assists with providing mentors and the opportunity to learn from industry vets.

Reflecting on her success, Maya-Camille believes the most effective tool used to grow her business has been the network of relationships and mentorships she gained along the way.
