When it comes to technology, Chicago historically hasn’t been a fly over city as much as it’s been a fly through city.

When Bill Gates would fly from Seattle to Miami he’d have a layover in Chicago where entrepreneurs and investors would meet him at the gate (pre 9/11) at chat up the Microsoft founder before his next flight, explained ChicagoNext Chairman Mark Tebbe (pictured, right) during Thursday’s Chicago Venture Summit.

Fast forward to today, there are plenty of reasons for tech leaders to spend more than a couple hours in Chicago, Tebbe said.

The increased activity in Chicago’s startup scene is exactly why the Venture Summit, now in its second year, exists: to show out-of-town VCs the innovative companies building in Chicago, and why they should invest in the Midwest.
